Maarten 't Hart (born November 25, 1944 in Maassluis ) is a Dutch writer .

Life

Maarten 't Hart was born as the eldest son of the gravedigger Paulus' t Hart and his wife Magdalena van den Giessen. He grew up in a strictly Calvinist environment and had an interest in books as a child. From 1962 to 1968 he studied biology at the University of Leiden with a focus on behavioral research and worked from 1970 to 1987 at the same university as a lecturer in behavioral biology . He wrote his doctoral thesis on the behavior of rats .

In 1971 he made his debut as a writer - initially under the name of Martin Hart - with the novel Stenen voor een ransuil . In 1975 he received the Multatuli Literature Prize for his first volume of short stories and in 1978 he achieved his first great success with the book about his youth memories Een vlucht regenwulpen ( Eng . "A flock of whimbrel"), which was filmed in 1981.

The author stands in the tradition of realistic literature of the 19th century . He is less interested in the structural subtleties of the modern novel than in the precise and atmospherically dense description of the familiar landscape and the people of his homeland. Much of his work contains autobiographical elements; most of his books are written from a first-person perspective. Popular and often recurring themes are Calvinism (although 't Hart is a staunch atheist), classical music (especially Johann Sebastian Bach ), unhappy love and nature.

Maarten 't Hart is one of the most popular authors in the Netherlands. His books have been translated into many languages, including a. translated into German , English and Swedish . He has been married to Anneke van den Muyzenberg since 1967 and lives as an author and columnist at the “Teylingerhof” in Warmond near Leiden in the south of Holland .
