Een Vlucht Regenwulpen ( German : A Swarm of Whimbrel ) is a film adaptation of the 1981 novel of the Dutch novel by Maarten 't Hart . The psychological film with strongly autobiographical traits tells the traumatic childhood and adolescence experiences of the main character Maarten ('t Hart), their late processing in adulthood and growing up.

34-year-old Maarten (Jeroen Krabbé) is a successful microbiologist who deals with the cloning of living beings without sexual reproduction. One night he dreams that if he has not established a sexual relationship with a woman within seven days, he will die. Due to his strict Calvinist upbringing, the never-resolved relationship with his childhood sweetheart Martha (Willeke van Ammelrooy) and his close ties to his seriously ill mother (Marijke Merckens), Maarten has not been interested in a relationship with a woman. With the help of his brutal alter ego (also Jeroen Krabbé) Maarten begins to do things that he would never have dared to do before. During the seven-day search, the most important childhood memories catch up with him and he finally overcomes his childhood trauma.
Novel
The novel Een Vlucht Regenwulpen was published in 1978 by De Arbeiderpers in Amsterdam. It marks the beginning of Maarten't Hart's successful writing career. It is one of the most widely read novels in the Netherlands. In 2014 Maarten 't Hart received the "Diamanten Boek" award for the millionth printed copy of this novel. The German translation from 1988 was provided by Waltraud Hüsmert and is entitled Ein Schwarm Regenbrachvögel . It was published in 1988 by Suhrkamp-Verlag.
