action

The twin sisters are cruelly separated from each other after the death of their parents as children. The on tuberculosis ill Lotte comes to the relationship in the Netherlands . Anna, who is healthy, comes to live with direct peasant relatives. While Lotte grows up in very good circumstances, Anna has to toil day and night.

When Anna hooks up with a young SA man, her uncle Heinrich, a Nazi opponent, beats Anna half-dead. As a maid , Anna ends up at the estate of the National Socialist Countess Charlotte von Falkenau, who treats Anna well. Lotte, who has since found out that her letters to Anna were never sent, is engaged to a Jewish musician. She manages to visit her sister in Germany . When she parted, however, Anna's anti-Semitic remark made her think, which is why Lotte broke off contact with her twin sister for a while.

Then the war also reaches the Netherlands. Lotte's fiancé, the Jew David, was deported to Buchenwald in 1942 and later to Auschwitz , where he died. The desperate Lotte forsakes all German, denies her origins and also vows never to speak German again. Anna is now married to the Waffen SS man Martin and lives with his parents in Vienna. She, who loves Martin dearly, suffers from his frequent absence. Shortly before the end of the war, Martin, who had previously survived the Eastern Front , fell in a battle with the Americans in the Eifel .

Anna and Lotte only meet again in 1947 when Anna visits her sister in Holland. Lotte is now married to David's brother Bram, with whom she has a daughter. After an initial refusal, Lotte opens up more to her sister again. However, when she saw Anna's wedding photo with Martin in SS uniform in Anna's suitcase, she was angry. She throws Anna out of the house, alleging that she is a Nazi and that she is married to one of the "murderers" of her fiancé David for a reason. The sisters parted ways for many decades.
