life and work
Stefan Brijs was born in 1969 in the city of Genk in the Belgian province of Limburg and went to school there. In 1990 he passed his teaching degree and began working as a teacher at his former school, the Sint-Jozefinstituut in the Bokrijk district. Since 1997 he has been writing novels , essays , articles and reviews, among others for the Belgian daily newspapers De Morgen and De Standaard . Since 1999 he has only worked as a writer. In 2003 he moved to Koningshooikt, a village in the municipality of Lier in the province of Antwerp .
In 1997, De bewording was his first novel, which was described as magical and realistic. After this debut, Brijs visited Flemish cemeteries to visit the burial sites of his literary predecessors, including Gustaaf Vermeersch, Richard Minne, Maurice Gilliams and Karel van de Woestijne . He described his experiences in doing this in the essay De vergeethoek , which appeared in 1998. He was then included in De vergeethoek , a series of literary portraits of forgotten Flemish writers.
In 2000 Arend was published , a novel about a disfigured boy who seeks himself in order to understand and love his situation. Villa Keetje Tippel appeared in the summer of 2001, causing a stir. This monograph tells the story of the writer Neel Doff and her now completely dilapidated villa in Genk, which she visited every summer from 1908 to 1939 and which inspired her for several works. In the winter of 2001, Twee levens , a Christmas story , was published. The next novel was published in October 2005, De engelenmaker , which has received several prizes and has been translated into 13 languages.
In October 2006, on behalf of the city of Turnhout and the De Warande cultural center, the book Korrels in Gods grote zandbak was published , a collection of essays on the authors of Turnhout such as Renier Snieders, Eugeen Edward Stroobant, Jozef Simons and Ward Hermans.
In 2011 the war novel Post voor mevrouw Bromley was published and in 2015 Brijs published the novel Maan en Zon , which is set on the island of Curaçao .
