Maurice Guillaume Rosalie Gilliams (born July 20, 1900 in Antwerp ; † October 18, 1982 there ) was a Belgian typographer , poet and writer .

Life

Maurice Gilliams was born the son of the printer Frans Gilliams. Between 1909 and 1911 he attended the boarding school of the Sint Victor monastery in Turnhout . During the First World War the family was forced to leave Belgium and fled to Amsterdam . After the war, Gilliams went to Paris , where he studied typography . After completing his studies, he worked as a typographer and lecturer at Roger Avermaete's vocational school for arts and crafts. He later worked as a bookseller and teacher. In 1947 he became a member of the Royal Academy for Dutch Linguistics and Literature Studies (KANTL) in Ghent , of which he became director in 1954. In 1955 he came to the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp as a librarian . From 1960 to 1976 he was again a secretary at the KANTL.

In 1935 he married Gabriëlle Baelemans, from whom he soon separated. However, the divorce did not become final until 1976. Shortly afterwards, in April 1976, he married Maria Eliza Antonia de Raeymaekers.

In 1980 he was raised to the nobility. King Baudouin awarded him the title of baron .

The Maurice Gilliam Prize of the KANTL, awarded from 1985 to 2002, was named after him.

Film adaptations

The novel Elias of het gevecht met de nachtegalen was made into a film in 1991 under the direction of Klaas Rusticus . Viviane de Muynck and Brikke Smets played the leading roles.
