Maylis de Kerangal (born June 16, 1967 in Toulon ) is a French writer .

biography

Childhood and youth

The daughter and granddaughter of captains on long journeys spent her childhood in Le Havre . From 1985 to 1990 she studied history, philosophy and ethnology. She started working at Gallimard-jeunesse for the first time from 1991 to 1996 before two stays in the United States in Golden , Colorado in 1997. She continued her education for a year in 1998 at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris .

Career as a writer

Her first novel, Je marche sous un ciel de traîne , was published in 2000, followed by La Vie voyageuse in 2003 and Ni fleurs, ni couronnes in 2006 and Corniche Kennedy in 2008 . In 2008 this novel was up for grabs for several literary prizes such as the Prix ​​Médicis or the Prix ​​Femina .

At the same time, she created the Éditions du Baron Perché, intended for young people, on which she worked from 2004 to 2008 before reverting to writing. She also took part in the Revue Inculte.

On November 3, 2010, she was unanimously awarded the Prix ​​Médicis for her novel Naissance d'un pont . In the same year the book was selected for the Prix ​​Femina , the Prix ​​Goncourt , and the Prix ​​de Flore . In December 2010 she received the Franz Hessel Prize together with Kathrin Röggla . With Naissance d'un pont she had succeeded in “composing a novel in a multi-layered, dramatic narrative that is stirring and impressive”. The Italian version of the book was awarded the Premio Gregor von Rezzori in 2014.

She also received several awards for the following novel Réparer les vivants (German title: Repairing the Living ). The 24-hour story of a young, brain-dead man whose heart is being transplanted into the breast of a 51-year-old woman won her the Grand prix RTL-Lire, the novel des étudiants - France Culture-Télérama, the Prix in France in 2014 Orange du Livre, the Prix des lecteurs de L'Express - BFM TV and the Prix Relay. A film adaptation of the novel of the same name, directed by Katell Quillévéré and starring Tahar Rahim and Emmanuelle Seigner , was also released in 2016. The English translation of Mend the Living made it onto the longlist of the Man Booker International Prize that same year .
