The Gabelhorn ( 3136 m above sea level ) is a not easy to reach mountain with a beautiful panoramic view of the Valais Alps on the east side of the Mattertal, east above St. Niklaus Dorf . With optimal visibility, 417 peaks are recognizable, 417 of them over 2000 m , 256 over 3000 m and 26 over 4000 m . The Gabelhorn is one of the northern foothills of the Balfrin group . It consists of two towers that form a fork and which are very clearly visible from St. Niklaus as well as from Visp .
First ascent
For a long time, the two teeth of the fork horn were considered to be impossible to climb, until after repeated attempts in 1904 they were finally conquered. Then the Edelspitze, the higher northern summit ( 3136 m above sea level ) of the Gabelhorn was first climbed on August 13, 1904 by MM. JF Kern and Monod-Herzen with Ferdinand Furrer. The first climbers reached the summit by throwing stones and rope.
Summit cross and summit book
Since 1988 stands on the summit of the Edelspitze, i. H. On the north summit ( 3136 m above sea level ) of the Gabelhorn, a cross, installed by the St. Niklaus local group of the Monte Rosa section of the Swiss Alpine Club . Since the erection of the cross, a summit book can be found there, which shows that the summit is climbed relatively rarely.
