Gabriel Cromer (* 1873 ; † 1934 ) was a French photographer and collector.

Life

Gabriel Cromer initially studied law, but soon turned to photography . He ran a studio in Clamart and earned a reputation as a master of portrait photography using carbon printing . In 1912 he became a member of the French photography association Société française de photographie , in 1927 he became the society's librarian. He became famous as a collector. He focused on France and documented the history of photography since the days of Louis Daguerre . His collection comprised five hundred early, mostly French, daguerreotypes , a total of around 6000 photographs, including works by Le Gray , Le Secq , Disdéri and Adolphe Braun ; in addition, an extensive library of specialist literature and rare photographic equipment, such as a daguerreotype camera from the manufacturer Giroux . The numerous special features from the early days of photography included a photo of Daguerre by Jean-Baptiste Sabatier-Blot, a study made by Daguerre for a diorama picture, and a plate signed by him.

In 1939, five years after Gabriel Cromer's death, his widow sold the collection to the Eastman Kodak Company for 500,000 francs ($ 13,000). The Cromer Collection was then donated to the museum in George Eastman House, founded in 1949 . There it formed the basis of the photographic collection and "determines the tenor, quality and breadth of the institution."
