Gadi Eizenkot ( Hebrew גדי איזנקוט; * 1960 in Tiberias , Israel ) is an Israeli officer and historian. From the beginning of 2015 to January 2019 he was Chief of Staff (Ramatkal) of the Israel Defense Forces . He is the author of the Dahiya Doctrine .

Military career

Eizenkot grew up in Israel's southern port city of Eilat and was actually aiming for a career in the navy, but then began his military service with the Golani Brigade , which he later commanded from 1997 to 1998. During this time he studied history and graduated with a bachelor's degree from Tel Aviv University . He later earned a Masters in Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College . In 1999 he became military secretary to the prime minister and the defense minister under Ehud Barak . Until that time, he had the (366th Armored Division, a reserve major formation of the Southern Command) Amud-Haesh Division and the Judea and Samaria - Division commanded. From June 2005 he headed the Directorate for Operations. After Udi Adam resigned as commander of the North Command in October 2006, Eizenkot was given his post.

On February 16, 2015, Eizenkot succeeded Benny Gantz as the 21st Chief of the General Staff of the Israel Defense Forces . He retired on January 13, 2019.

Private

Eizenkot's family comes from Morocco . He is married and has five children.
