Aviv Kochavi ( Hebrew אביב כוכבי; Born April 23, 1964 in Kirjat Bialik ) is an Israeli officer . He is Lieutenant General ( Rav Aluf ) and Chief of Staff ( Ramatkal ) of the Israel Defense Forces since January 15, 2019 , as the successor to Gadi Eizenkot .

Military career

In August 1982 he began his conscription and joined the 890th Echis Paratrooper Brigade . After training as an officer, he became an infantry officer and professional soldier in 1985 . He was involved in the First and Second Intifada , in the Lebanon Wars in 1982 and 2006, and in military operations in the Gaza Strip .

Kochavi commanded various military units. In 2005 he was the commandant of the Gaza Division during the withdrawal of the Israeli army from the Gaza Strip based on the unilateral disengagement plan of Israel . Later, he led the operations division of the Department of Operations and was from 2010 to 2014 director of military intelligence Aman . In November 2014 he was given the Israeli North Command and in May 2017 he became Deputy Chief of the General Staff.

Personal and education

Kochavi grew up in his native Kirjat Bialik, a town near Haifa . During his youth he was a member of HaMahanot HaOlim , a youth group of the left Zionists . He is vegan , married and has three daughters.

He studied philosophy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem , public administration at Harvard University and international relations at Johns Hopkins University .
