Galactite or galactitol (further synonyms dulcitol, dulcitol) is - as the sugar alcohol of galactose - a harmful degradation product, which is increased in congenital galactosemia , a galactose degradation disorder, by reducing the aldehyde group by the aldose reductase . It is also found in some plants. Galactitol or galactitol can be detected in the urine , a test that is used to diagnose and monitor the progress of galactosemia.
