history

In 1995 Michael Janssen founded his gallery in Cologne, where he ran it for twelve years. At the beginning of 2007 a branch was added in Berlin, which has been used as the only exhibition space since the end of July 2008 after the premises in Cologne were given up. The opening exhibition in Berlin took place on April 27, 2007 and was a group exhibition under the title "Blood Meridian".

From 2007 to 2012 the gallery rooms were on the 4th floor of a former factory building near Checkpoint Charlie . In 2013 Michael Janssen moved his gallery to Potsdamer Strasse in Berlin-Tiergarten. The rooms accommodate solo and group exhibitions of young artists, but also artists such as Peter Zimmermann , Yoshitaka Amano , Thomas Grünfeld and Enoc Perez. The gallery primarily represents German and American artists and regularly organizes exhibitions for them that last an average of five weeks. The focus is on figurative painting , sculpture and installations . Over the years Michael Janssen has also increasingly campaigned for the rediscovery of older artists such as Lynda Benglis , Pino Pascali, Lili Dujourie , Rose Wylie and Gianfranco Baruchello .

Also in early 2013, the gallery opened a branch in the Gillman Barracks in Singapore . In addition to Southeast Asian artists, important artists from the West, such as John Baldessari in September 2013 , are shown there. The gallery attracted an international audience in 2013 with the exhibition "Baby Formula" by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei .

The gallery participated in the art fairs Art Cologne 2009, the ARCO Madrid 2008–2010, the Art Forum Berlin 2009, Hong Kong Art Fair 2010–2013, Art Stage Singapore 2012–2013, Zona Maco Mexico 2010–2013 and the Armory Show , New York 2010.
