Peter Zimmermann (artist)

Peter Zimmermann (* 1956 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German painter, sculptor, object artist and university professor.

Life

Peter Zimmermann studied at the Stuttgart Art Academy from 1978 to 1983 and has since had numerous solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums in Germany and abroad. He works as a painter, sculptor and object artist. From 2002 to 2007 he was a professor at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne .

Creating art

Zimmermann's works are extremely diverse. At the end of the 1980s he created “Book Cover Paintings”, in which he applied the book titles of atlases, art books, travel guides and dictionaries to the canvas with epoxy. In his cardboard objects he worked with spatial distortions of writing and thus questioned the relationship between text and image. The colorful motifs of his epoxy resin pictures are created from digital templates, such as photos, film stills or diagrams, which he alienates using graphic algorithms and transfers to the canvas in numerous transparent epoxy resin layers. Since 2014 he has also increasingly implemented this conceptual approach with oil painting.

The focus of his work is both the question of the relationship between the original and the image, as well as dealing with the concept of surface.

Zimmermann's works can be found in numerous private and public collections, such as the Federal Art Collection in Bonn, the Center Georges Pompidou, Paris and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. The artist lives and works in Cologne.
