The gallery m is a gallery for contemporary art in the park of the castle ruins Haus Weitmar in Bochum.

History and profile

Galerie m was founded in 1969 by Alexander von Berswordt-Wallrabe as a gallery for new concrete art, photography, film and video. The first exhibition m1 - Young European Art was opened on May 3, 1969 and showed positions by international artists. Jan Schoonhoven , Adolf Luther and François Morellet were among the first artists to be represented by the gallery.

In the 1970s, the gallery's program expanded further; internationally renowned artists such as Arnulf Rainer , Lee Ufan and Richard Serra were represented by Galerie m. Artists like Frank Stella had their first solo exhibition in Germany here. Exhibitions by photographers such as Florence Henri , André Kertész, Emmanuel Sougez and later Evelyn Hofer expanded the program in media form and accentuated photography as a further focus of the gallery. In 1971 the first overview catalog “New Concrete Art” was published, which was largely responsible for the naming of this movement in European post-war art. Alexander von Berswordt-Wallrabe has been working with Richard Serra since 1976, whom he has represented in Europe through the m Bochum art agency.

A special focus of the gallery work is on cooperation with museums. Exhibition series with work cycles such as dead still by Dirk Reinartz or Hiroshima by Arnulf Rainer started in the Galerie m.

Susanne Breidenbach, who had been with Galerie m since 1985, took over the management in 2003. The Galerie m Photography , which she founded in 2000, is now part of the Galerie m.

Galerie m has been represented at Art Basel , Paris Photo and Art Düsseldorf for many years .
