The kind Dusseldorf is an art fair in Dusseldorf . Established and young, regional and international galleries have been showing post-war and contemporary art at Art Düsseldorf since 2017. From November 16 to 18, 2018, with 91 participating galleries from 19 countries, the second edition of the regional art fair took place in Areal Böhler, an old industrial location of Böhler-Werke developed from 1914 .

Organizer of Art Dusseldorf is art.fair International GmbH, based in Cologne . The GmbH is majority owned by Andreas Lohaus and Walter Gehlen, who organized the Artfair in Cologne from 2003 to 2016 . The MCH Group from Basel , which organizes Art Basel , among other things , acquired a 25.1 percent stake in the company in February 2017 . The MCH Group sold its stake in 2019 to the London trade fair organizers Sandy Angus and Tim Etchells, founders and shareholders of various art fairs in the Asia-Pacific region. In order to expand its strategic position, Angus also acquired a further 15 percent stake in Art Düsseldorf. Walter Gehlen has been the sole managing director and director of the fair since 2018.

The selection of the galleries participating in the fair is made by an advisory board. Of the more than 90 participants in the second edition, 53 percent came from the region ( Germany and the Benelux countries ), especially from the Rhineland, and 47 percent from the international area. In addition to numerous top-class galleries, the fair with the Post-Lehman section also offers special support to young galleries from the founding year 2008. Both exhibitions attracted around 40,000 visitors. According to the company, the art fair is aimed primarily at those interested in art in the densely populated and affluent center of the so-called Blue Banana .

resonance

The media and experts rated the appearance of this second major art fair in the Rhineland as a challenge for the so far leading Art Cologne, in the tradition of rivalry between the Rhine cities . Daniel Hug , the director of Art Cologne, criticized the fact that Art Düsseldorf would be another “offshoot” of Art Basel. This threatens regional diversity and is a "form of colonialism ".

However, the second edition of Art Düsseldorf in 2018 closed with a consistently positive balance from exhibitors, visitors and the press. The art fair established itself as a fixed date for collectors, gallery owners, curators and art lovers in the region.
