The gallery grave Ostönnen is a megalithic burial complex of the Neolithic Wartberg culture near Ostönnen , a district of Soest in the Soest district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) , which has only survived in remains and is not visible above ground .

location

The grave is located east of Ostönnen on Hellweg on the parcel “Auf dem Krägenbrink”. The site was inhabited for a long time in prehistory and early history. Here traces of settlements of were Linearbandkeramik , a Late Bronze - / early Iron Age urn field and early- to late medieval pottery discovered.

Research history

The grave was discovered in 1904 during leveling work. The neighboring urn grave field was destroyed and the gallery grave was also significantly damaged. In 1929 the remains of the complex were archaeologically examined under the direction of August Stieren . Field inspections of the site took place in the 1960s .

description

architecture

The plant is oriented west-east. It has a total length of 23 m and a width of 2.8 m; the original height is unknown. The burial chamber has an inner length of 22 m and a width of 2.2 m. The chamber was built from slabs of Soest green sandstone , all of which were removed in 1904. During the excavation in 1929, only fragments and the standing pits could be found. The pits are between 0.6 m and 2.3 m long and between 0.3 m and 0.4 m wide. There were gaps between the wall panels, which were probably filled with dry masonry. It is not entirely clear where the access to the chamber was. Bulls suspected it was on the southern long side, about 6 m from the western end. There he noticed a larger gap 1 m wide, which was bordered by two small stones. According to Kerstin Schierhold , however, this would be an unusual position, since the entrances to the Rimbeck-type gallery graves are otherwise always in the middle of a long side.

The building material for the chamber came from the immediate vicinity and probably only had to be brought a few hundred meters. The material requirement is estimated at around 122.4 t.

Burials

Several human bones were found during the 1929 excavation. These were long considered lost and were only found again in 2004. They can be assigned to at least six individuals. Of these, two can be safely identified as male adults, one as an adult or adolescent of unclear gender and one as an adolescent girl.

Additions

No pottery from the time the grave was used was found during the excavation. The only additions were three blades and a discount from Feuerstein discovered. Green patina on a human pelvic bone suggests jewelry or tools made of copper were added. During the field inspections, further flint artifacts (blades, scrapers and cross-edged arrowheads ) were found, which may also come from the grave.

Dating

Using the radiocarbon method , the usage time of the facility was reduced to 4480 ± 40 BP ; 3205 ± 99 calBC can be determined.
