The high bedstraw ( Galium elongatum ), also known as high bog bedstraw , is a species of the Rubiaceae family. It occurs scattered in Central Europe.

The High bedstraw is a perennial , herbaceous plant . It differs from the bog bedstraw mainly in the longer leaves, the clearly white-edged stems and the higher growth. The high bedstraw reaches stature heights of up to over 100 cm. The stem is smooth and often almost winged with white edges. The leaves sitting of up to six pieces in a whorl on the stem, wherein the average lengths reach of about 15 to 20 mm.

The high bedstraw flowers mainly in the months of June to August. The inflorescence has a broad pyramidal shape. The four-lobed corolla is white and has a diameter of up to 4.5 mm.

The 1.7 to 2.5 mm long fruits are bare.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 96.

Occurrence

The distribution area of ​​the tall bedstraw includes Europe and extends from the Mediterranean to northwestern Iran.

In Germany, the high bedstraw occurs very scattered or rarely. Among other things, it is missing in the north over large stretches. In Austria this species is also quite rare and in some areas, for example in the Alps, classified as endangered. In Switzerland, Galium elongatum occurs almost only in the north of the area. It is not common there either.

The high bedstraw grows in swamps and on the banks of waters. It prefers wet, nutrient-rich and often peaty clay and swamp humus soils. It thrives in Central Europe in companies of the Alnion and Magnocaricion associations.

Systematics

A synonym for Galium elongatum C. Presl is Galium palustre subsp. elongatum ( C.Presl ) long . It is closely related to the marsh bedstraw ( Galium palustre ).
