To the east of Galterö, only separated by the Galterösundet , which is only a few meters wide , is the island of Brännö . A small bridge has been connecting the two islands since May 2011; before that, for at least 150 years, the crossing was only possible via a pebble bank. To the south are Krokholmen , Stora Stårholmen , Galterö Rönnskär , to the northwest Böttö and north to Varholmen . Several peninsulas protrude from Galterö into the sea. To the northwest is Galteröhuvud , to the northeast is Sundholmen . Galterö extends for about 2 kilometers in an east-west direction and 1.3 kilometers in a north-south direction. The ferry routes Göteborg– Kiel and Göteborg– Frederikshavn pass north of Galterö .

The island consists of a rock formation. Unlike the neighboring islands in Gothenburg's southern archipelago, however, there are several landscape zones. In addition to the beach, cliffs and wetlands, there are also meadows. The bird life on Galterö is particularly diverse. There are oystercatchers , Canada goose , redshank , kestrel and meadow pipit, among others . In the summer there are also dunlins , beach sandpipers and plovers . A designation as a nature reserve failed due to concerns of the Swedish military that the island is considered to be important in terms of defense strategy.

In addition to summer houses, there are also some military buildings on Galterö. There is no port. A hiking trail about three kilometers long leads across the island. Around 100 sheep from Brännö farmers graze on Galterö in summer. Heather grows especially on the cliffs of the island , which the sheep like to graze on. In order to prevent the heather from becoming lignified, the heather is burned down by fire every spring. The herb sprouts gently and remains edible for the sheep. This form of grazing has taken place on Galterö since historical times. Plant species that are otherwise typical for the region are therefore sometimes not found on Galterö.

Eyebright , common flax , heather carnation , beach centaury , swamp gentian and swamp stendelwort can be found on the beaches and in the meadows of the island .

There are 33 monuments designated by the Swedish National Monument Protection Agency, Riksantikvarieämbetet , on the island .
