Gamagara ( English Gamagara Local Municipality ) is a local municipality in the John Taolo Gaetsewe district , the South African province of Northern Cape . The seat of the municipal administration is in Kathu . Mayor is Edwin Ophaketse Hantise.
The community name is a Setswana term for a dry river located there . This in turn is named after a man with the name Mogara.

In 2011 the community had 41,617 inhabitants. 55% of them were black, 28.7% colored and 14% white. The spoken language was 51.6% Afrikaans, 32.3% Setswana and 3.5% English. Several other languages have values around 1%.
