Gamagara ( English Gamagara Local Municipality ) is a local municipality in the John Taolo Gaetsewe district , the South African province of Northern Cape . The seat of the municipal administration is in Kathu . Mayor is Edwin Ophaketse Hantise.

The community name is a Setswana term for a dry river located there . This in turn is named after a man with the name Mogara.
