Economy and Transport

In 2010, 41.3 million tons of iron ore were mined in Sishen. While iron ore only contains around 30 percent lump and 70 percent fine ore on average worldwide , the ratio in Sishen is around 60 percent to 40 percent. The open pit mine is one of the largest in the world. The mine is owned by the South African company Kumba, around 65 percent of which is owned by the Anglo American mining group. The ore is transported to the crushing plant in a “ Komatsu 730E ” heavy truck . The trucks can each load 150 to 170 tons of cargo and are equipped with pantographs so that they can use an overhead line when driving uphill with cargo .

The ore is transported to the ore terminal in the port of Saldanha via the 861 km long railway line . The trains are over two kilometers long, sometimes up to four kilometers, and are among the heaviest freight trains on earth. The line is electrified.

The airport Sishen Airport is closer to Kathu than Dingleton. The N14 national road runs east past Dingleton.
