Gamal al-Ghitani ( Arabic جمال أحمد الغيطاني Jamal Ahmad al-Ghitani , DMG Ǧamāl Aḥmad al-Ġīṭānī ; * May 9, 1945 in Guhaina , Upper Egypt ; † October 18, 2015 in Cairo ) was an Egyptian writer and journalist.

Life

After training as a carpet designer, al-Ghitani has worked as a journalist since 1968 and has since published numerous short stories and novels. For several years he was head of the cultural department of the daily Al-Akhbar .

His work criticizes the social and political development in Egypt since it opened to the West. Stylistically, his texts were often based on medieval Arabic models. In this way he tried to establish a special Arab-Egyptian storytelling tradition in the modern literature of his country. His historical novel Zaini Barakat , which is also available in German, is considered the best-known work of this kind.

Gamal al-Ghitani was the founder and editor of the literary magazine Akhbar al-Adab . He has received numerous national and international literary prizes and was awarded the Knight of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1987 .
