The Amistad-Kärpfling ( Gambusia amistadensis ) is an extinct freshwater fish from the genus of the gambus .
description
Its length was 3.5 to 4 centimeters. The body was relatively slender and there were numerous teeth in each jaw . The male formed a gonopodium from the 4th ray of the anal fin . Preserved specimens showed strong cross-hatching and numerous dark pigmented sickle-shaped spots on the edges of the scales . The middle strip of the back was narrow, the belly strip wide. There was also a dark lower eye line. The adult females were characterized by a permanent dark anal spot.
Occurrence
It occurred exclusively in the fast-flowing warm spring waters of Goodenough Spring , formerly the third largest Texas spring and tributary of the Rio Grande in Val Verde County , Texas .
Food and reproduction
Its diet consisted of suspended organic matter (detritus), algae and small arthropods. The females gave birth to live young.
die out
This species was wiped out in the wild in July 1968 when the Amistad reservoir, Goodenough Spring, permanently flooded, destroying the Amistad carafe's habitat. When it was first described scientifically in 1973, there were only populations in aquariums and artificial ponds. The United States Fish and Wildlife Service listed this species as threatened in 1980, at a time when only two populations remained under human care. These fish were kept in the Brackenridge Field Laboratory at the University of Texas at Austin and the Dexter National Fish Hatchery in New Mexico . The populations were mixed in captivity with Koboldkärpflingen ( Gambusia affinis ), which followed or hybridized with the Amistad-Kärpflingen. In 1986 this species was declared extinct by the IUCN .
