Gamelbert
Blessed Gamelbert was a Catholic clergyman who worked in the area of today's Deggendorf district in the 8th century . His name day is celebrated on January 17th .
life and work
Gamelbert came from a noble family and was the landlord in Michaelsbuch . In the middle of the 8th century, he acquired Tassilo III, Duke of Bavaria, on the opposite bank of the Danube between Mariaposching and Deggendorf . a piece of forest for which he had to pay a tax called "Medema", from which the name "Metten" for this place and the monastery was derived. The first abbot of the monastery was his godchild Utto , who directed the construction of the monastery from his hermitage (today's Uttobrunn ). When twelve monks from Reichenau monastery came to the monastery in 766 , around 300 people are said to have already lived there.
Gamelbert is depicted in art as a secular priest or as a pilgrim surrounded by birds.
Grave finds from Uttenkofen , which is near Michaelsbuch, were dated to the late 7th or early 8th century and are associated with the "founding family" of the Metten monastery.
