Gangara is a rural municipality in the department Gazaoua in Niger .

geography

Gangara lies at the transition from the large Sudan to the Sahel zone and borders the neighboring state of Nigeria in the south . The neighboring communities in Niger are Aguié in the northwest and Gazaoua in the northeast. The municipality is divided into 21 administrative villages, 14 hamlets and 16 camps. The main town of the rural community is the administrative village of Gangara.

history

Gangara was originally dependent on the emirate of Katsina and came under French control in the early 20th century . In 1903 there was a revolt of the villagers against the French, which was suppressed.

The rural community of Gangara emerged from the Canton of Gangara in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform. Since 2011, the rural community no longer belongs to the Aguié department , but to the newly created Gazaoua department.

population

At the 2001 census, Gangara had 29,255 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, the population was 51,930.

Economy and Infrastructure

The community is located in the narrow zone along the border with Nigeria, which extends from Tounouga in the west to Malawa in the east and is used in irrigation farming for cash crops .
