history

In the 1960s, the Aguié market was an important transshipment point for peanuts , Niger's most important export at the time. In 1972, Aguié became the capital of the Arrondissement of Tessaoua , now the department of Aguié. The place was raised to a municipality in 2002 as part of a state-wide administrative reform. The municipal area was expanded to include those parts of the canton of Aguié that were not added to the newly founded rural community of Tchadoua.

population

At the 1977 census, Aguié had 6,651 inhabitants, at the 1988 census 5963 inhabitants and at the 2001 census 11,384 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, after an increase in the municipal area, the population was 152,788. The predominant ethnic groups in Aguié are Hausa , Fulbe and dark-skinned Tuareg .

Economy and Infrastructure

Millet field in Aguié

The population lives mainly from agriculture and animal husbandry. The city lies at the transition from the zone of rain-fed agriculture in the north to the zone of irrigated agriculture in the south. Millet, sorghum , cowpeas , peanuts, sedge and sesame are grown. The erosion by water and wind as well as the over-management due to scarce arable land lead to soil degradation .

There are eight weekly markets in Aguié. The most important are those in the city center and in the villages of Dan Saga, Débi and Maïgaoudé. There is mainly informal trade . Everyday finished goods are imported from neighboring Nigeria, and agricultural products are exported to Nigeria.

There is a hospital and several other health facilities that are poorly equipped. There are 82 schools available for education, including two kindergartens. Aguié is the seat of a Tribunal d'Instance, one of the 30 civil courts nationwide , which are below the ten civil courts of the first instance (Tribunal de Grande Instance). The national road 1 runs through Aguié, which connects the town with the regional capitals Maradi in the west and Zinder in the east. Most of the traffic is by off-road vehicles and carts.
