The neighboring communities in Niger are Koona and Maïjirgui in the north, Hawandawaki and Korgom in the east and Aguié and Gangara in the west. The municipality is divided into 55 administrative villages, one traditional village, 59 hamlets and 36 camps. The main town of the rural community is the administrative village of Gazaoua.

history

Gazaoua ("Gasaua") in Stieler's Hand Atlas (1891)

Gazaoua and Maradi were the targets of refugees from Katsina after the Fulbe defeated Katsina in 1812. While Maradi initially had to submit to the supremacy of the Fulbe, the Katsina refugees in Gazaoua were able to repel all attacks by the Fulbe right from the start. In the 1850s, the German Africa explorer Heinrich Barth visited the place.

The French research and military expedition, Mission Foureau-Lamy , stayed in Gazaoua from November 24-29, 1899. The place fell permanently to France at the beginning of the 20th century. The Gazaoua market was one of the small markets in the region allowed by the French administration at the time.

Niger gained independence in 1960. In 1964 an administrative reform divided the state into 32 arrondissements, the forerunners of the later departments. Gazaoua was added to the newly created arrondissement Tessaoua (later the department of Tessaoua ) and received the status of an administrative post ( poste administratif ) in the area of the arrondissement. Administrative posts were special territorial units one level below the arrondissements, which were regarded as a kind of preliminary stage for a later conversion into a separate arrondissement. In the case of Gazaoua, this was initially not implemented, the community remained with Tessaoua. Aguié, including Gazaoua, was later detached from Tessaoua as a department. Gazaoua belonged to the canton of Aguié at an administrative level below the departments. In 2002 Gazaoua was detached from the canton of Aguié as an independent rural municipality as part of a further administrative reform. In the flood disaster in West and Central Africa in 2010 , 1,881 residents of Gazaoua were classified as victims of the disaster. The administrative post of Gazaoua was finally removed from the department of Aguié in 2011 and raised to the department of Gazaoua.

population

At the 2001 census, Gazaoua had 80,107 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, the population was 108,606. Gazaoua is a traditional center of the Azna .

Economy and Infrastructure

The community lies at the transition from the zone of rain-fed farming in the north to the zone of irrigated farming in the south. National Road 1 runs through Gazaoua and connects the town with the regional capitals of Maradi and Zinder .
