Korgom is a rural municipality in the department Tessaoua in Niger .

geography

Korgom lies at the transition from the Sahel to the greater Sudan landscape . The neighboring communities are Baoudetta , Koona and Maïjirgui in the northwest, Garagoumsa and Kantché in the northeast, Daouché in the southeast, Hawandawaki in the south and Gazaoua in the southwest. The municipality is divided into 37 administrative villages, 29 traditional villages, 45 hamlets and three camps. The main town of the rural municipality is the administrative village of Korgom.

history

At the beginning of the 19th century, Korgom belonged to the Katsina Empire , which was conquered by the Fulbe in 1812 . In 1819 the Fulbe were pushed back from the north of Katsina, where a new state was created with Maradi . The ruler of Maradi gave Korgom and Kantché to the Sultanate of Zinder as a thank you for granting him asylum by the Sultan of Zinder during the war. The French colonial administration established a canton in Korgom at the beginning of the 20th century , to which the dissolved Koona canton was attached in 1923. In 2002, as part of a nationwide administrative reform, the rural communities of Baoudetta, Hawandawaki and Koona were separated from the canton of Korgom. The rural community of Korgom emerged from the remaining area of ​​the canton.

At the 2001 census, Korgom had 36,563 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, the population was 68,057. Korgom is a traditional center of the Azna .

Economy and Infrastructure

The community lies at the transition from the zone of rain-fed farming in the north to the zone of irrigated farming in the south. National Road 20 runs through Korgom and leads south via Hawandawaki to the state border with Nigeria .
