Sarkin Haoussa (also: Sarki Haoussa , Serké Haoussa , Serkin Haoussa , Sharken-Haoussa ) is a rural community in the Mayahi department in Niger .

geography

Sarkin Haoussa is located in the Sahel region . The neighboring communities are Attantané in the northwest, Mayahi in the northeast, Aguié in the southeast, Tchadoua in the south, Saé Saboua in the southwest and Maïyara in the west. The Wadi Goulbi N'Kaba runs on the border with Attantané . The municipality is divided into 56 administrative villages, 31 hamlets and 15 camps. The main town of the rural community is the administrative village of Sarkin Haoussa (also: Serkin Haoussa).

history

Before the arrival of the French at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Sarkin Haoussa was part of the independent state of Gobir . In the 1960s, the market in the village of Dan Mairo was an important transshipment point for peanuts , Niger's most important export at the time. The rural community of Sarkin Haoussa emerged as an administrative unit in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform from the southwestern part of the canton of Mayahi. The administrative village of Maïssakoni was affected by the flood disaster in West and Central Africa in 2010 : 154 villagers were classified as victims of the disaster.

population

At the 2001 census, Sarkin Haoussa had 54,438 residents. At the 2012 census, the population was 76,312.

Economy and Infrastructure

The community is located in a zone where rain-fed agriculture is practiced. National Road 19 runs through Sarkin Haoussa and connects the town with the neighboring communities of Mayahi and Tchadoua.
