Gangwon Province or Gangwon-do was one of the Eight Provinces of Korea during the Joseon Dynasty . The province was created in 1395 and got its name from the names of the largest cities Gangneung and the provincial capital Wonju .

In 1895 Gangwon-do was replaced by the districts of Chuncheon ( kor. 춘천 부 , 春川 府 , Chuncheon-bu ) in the west and Gangneung ( 강릉 부 , 江陵 府 , Gangneung-bu ). (Wonju became part of the Chungju District.)

In 1896, Korea was again divided into 13 provinces and the two counties were united to re-form Gangwon-do Province. Although Wonju was reassigned to the Gangwon-do, the capital was moved to Chuncheon.

With the partition of Korea in 1945, the establishment of separate governments in North and South Korea in 1948 and the end of the Korean War , Ganwon -do was again divided into two separate provinces: Gangwon-do in South Korea and Kangwŏn-do in North Korea .
