Postal stationery catalog

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A postal stationery catalog is a directory of postal stationery , usually with consecutive numbering, price evaluation and images. They are similar in nature to postage stamp catalogs and often come from the same publishers.

history

In the first stamp directory from Oscar Berger-Levrault from September 1861, all known postal stationery was listed at the same time. In the early phase of philately there were no special postal stationery catalogs, since they were cataloged with postage, if at all. Even in today's postage stamp catalogs, postal stationery is sometimes included as a separate heading. In the course of time, however, many catalog providers outsourced the postal stationery to their own volumes. There are now separate postal stationery catalogs for certain collection areas, such as B. private postal stationery, picture postcards or catalogs for certain postal areas or country regions.

One of the first separate German postal stationery catalogs was the one from 1896 by the Senf brothers and in 1895 Stanley Gibbons published a volume of his own on this. But before that, Alwin Zschiesche had already published a catalog of all envelopes, wrappers and postcards issued up to 1880 . Again, there were specialized works, such as B. the first from 1875 from the dealer FB Prietsch, with the name "Catalog of all postal envelopes issued from 1818 to April 1875" from Leipzig for postal stationery envelopes with 33 pages. The most extensive catalog to date with worldwide coverage is the “World Postal Stationery Catalog” by Higgins & Gage with 19 partial editions that appeared gradually between 1964 and 1986.

properties

Features shown are stamp impressions , sometimes pictures of the complete postal stationery or characteristic parts thereof. In addition, further features can be included, such as, for example, the different flap shapes in the case of envelopes , in some cases their different perforation variants or other variations in the case of card letters. In addition to the prices for the complete collector's items, prices of the postal stationery clippings are sometimes also listed, which are usually between 10 and 50 percent of the complete postal stationery.
