Siegfried Ascher

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Siegfried Ascher (* 22. June 1877 in Berlin , † 22. February 1962 in Haifa ) was a German architect and a major postal stationery - Philatelist . His main philatelic work is the "Large Postal Stationery Catalog", which is still an internationally important standard work today.

Life

Ascher lived in Berlin-Wilmersdorf and worked as an architect and judicial expert for construction matters. During the First World War he was a captain and received the Iron Cross in 1915 . At the age of 29 he started collecting postal stationery. From 1909 he was a member of the Berlin postal stationery collectors association of 1901 (BGSV) and from 1912 he was a member of the board of the BGSV. He was friends with both Carl Lindenberg and Franz Kalckhoff . By participating in the Senf brothers' postal stationery catalog from 1914, he became familiar with the creation of postal stationery catalogs.

In 1939 he had to emigrate to what was then Palestine , and most of his large postal stationery collection was lost. In Israel he was instrumental in founding the local philatelic association.

Philatelic works

The smaller forerunner of the large Ascher catalog was:

  • The postal stationery catalog 1913–1920 : List of the state postal stationery newly published from 1913 to 1920, publisher: R. Noske, Borna (Bez. Leipzig), 1921 (173 pages)

He worked on the large Ascher catalog with the help of a few postal stationery collectors, between 1923 and 1929 as nine partial deliveries. These partial deliveries gradually appeared as smaller volumes and also as a complete work in two large volumes:

  • Large postal stationery catalog 1925–1928. Verlag R. Noske, Borna near Leipzig (with over 1300 pages)
    • Volume 1 from 1925: Afghanistan to Central Congo
    • Volume 2 from 1928: Mozambique to Württemberg

This catalog has appeared again and again to this day. Newer price lists for the postal stationery listed in the catalog have also appeared repeatedly:

  • 1st edition from 1975 with 62 pages
  • 2nd edition from 1988 with 216 pages
  • 3rd edition from 1996 with 176 pages
  • 4th edition of approx. [2004] with 177 pages

Another catalog in collaboration with Theodor Junker was:

  • The German postal stationery 1850–1930. Verlag R. Noske, Borna near Leipzig 1932 (390 pages)

He also wrote some philatelic articles and studies that appeared in the magazines for postage stamp collectors of the time. From 1919 to 1929 he was editor of the postal stationery magazine of the Berlin postal stationery collector association (BGSV) , and it changed its title several times over the years.
