From 1950 to 1957, he was a cultural officer in the Sunan Region Cultural Bureau and the Jiangsu Provincial Government. From the beginning of the 1950s he was active in literature and wrote short prose . In 1957, he was accepted into the Jiangsu Province Writers' Union and worked full time as a writer. In 1957, he and Lu Wenfu were part of a group of young writers who planned to found an association and magazine called Tansuozhe . He wrote the announcement for the magazine. Gao Xiaosheng was sentenced as a deviator . He was banned from writing and exiled to the country. He lived there as a farmer and was considered missing . It was not until 1979 that he was rehabilitated . He was then a member of the board of the Chinese Writers 'Association and vice chairman of the Jiangsu Province Writers' Association until his death .

In his early works he dealt with the life of peasants after the victory of the Chinese Communist Party . These works are given little attention today.
