García I (Navarre)
García I. Sánchez (* around 919; † February 22, 970 ) was King of Navarre from the House of Jiménez from 931 to 970 . He was a son of King Sancho I. Garcés and Toda Aznárez .
history
Since García was only six years old when his father died in 925, his uncle Jimeno Garcés initially took over the rule in Pamplona . When he died in 931, another uncle, Íñigo Garcés , claimed the reign for himself, but he was successfully ousted from Pamplona by Toda in 933. In any case, García had been the reigning king in name since 931 at the age of twelve, but his mother actually led the reign. In 934 the troops of the Caliph Abd ar-Rahman III fell. in Navarre; this forced Toda to submit to the suzerainty of the Caliphate of Cordoba , but at the same time recognized her son as king. Around the same time García himself took over the rule and married Andregoto , the heiress of the county of Aragón , which borders east on Navarre . Before 943 he separated from her and married Teresa, who is mentioned for the first time that year and was possibly a daughter of King Ramiro II of León . It was last mentioned in a document in September 957.
In 939, a united Christian army led by Ramiros II of León was able to end the power of the caliph north of the Duero in the victorious battle of Simancas . Later García got involved in the Leonese fratricidal fight in favor of his nephew Sancho I against his half-brother Ordoño III. In 958 he granted Sancho I exile in Pamplona after Ordoño IV had ousted him from León . Now in league with the caliph, he was able to restore his nephew to the throne of León the following year. García died on February 22, 970 and was buried in the chapel of the Castle of San Estebán near Villamayor de Monjardín .
