Gardner Memorial Church
The Gardner Memorial Church , formerly Southesk Church , is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish town of Brechin in the Council Area Angus . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. Furthermore, it forms a category B monument ensemble with various surrounding buildings.
history
The Gardner Memorial Church was built between 1896 and 1900. The Scottish architect John James Burnet is responsible for the design . The church was originally called Southesk Church and was only given its current name in 1997. Since 2008 the parish of Brechin has been associated with that of the Farnell Parish Kirk in Farnell . Both parishes share a pastor's office.

The church building is at the junction of Damacre Road and Southesk Street ( A935 ) in the center of Brechin. Its masonry consists of roughly hewn quarry stone with offset natural stone details made of red sandstone . Architecturally, the Gardner Memorial Church does not follow a uniform style, but instead mixes neo-Gothic and neo-Romanesque motifs in a free interpretation . On the left, on the corner of the street, the hall church has the massive, squat bell tower in front of it. In the lower section of the tower, a round arched window with a neo-Gothic window underneath is let into the street . Above it is the tower with two arched windows with archivolts and column shafts with sculptured capitals . Along Damacre Road, instead of the arched windows, paired lancet windows are embedded in a circular arched recess. The tower closes with a massive parapet and a slate-covered pyramid roof . The entrance portal to the right of the tower is executed with a sculptured archivolt and is suspected to be richly sculptured .
