The steel-blue Prachtkärpfling or Gardner's Prachtkärpfling ( Fundulopanchax gardneri ) is a killifish from western Africa . The species used to be part of the former subgenus Fundulopanchax within the species-rich genus of the Ornate Parrot ( Aphyosemion ). Today the steel-blue calf is placed in the genus Fundulopanchax , which is made up of the former aphyosemion sub-genera Fundulopanchax , Gularopanchax , Paludopanchax and Paraphyosemion . The type epithet refers to the officer RD Gardner, who brought the type specimens to Boulenger . It is kept as an aquarium fish and was first introduced to Germany for this purpose in 1913.

distribution and habitat

The steel blue Killie inhabits waters of the rainforest - and savannah areas in Nigeria and southwest Cameroon . The nominal form F. gardneri gardneri is found in the tributaries of the Cross River in southeastern Nigeria. Like most members of their genus, the animals prefer soft and slightly acidic water. The species is semi-human, so the clutches survive seasonal drying out of the home waters.

features

The genus-typical body of the steel-blue figurehead can reach a total length of 6.5 centimeters. On a metallic, iridescent green to blue colored background, the males wear crimson dots and spots, which can also be arranged in longitudinal rows in the front part. Their number fluctuates depending on the population, as does the pattern of the fins . Variants with a red longitudinal band have a yellow or, more rarely, orange border towards the edge of the fin. Fins that only have a drawing made up of red dots are usually lined with a bluish tinge or white. The coloring of the females is much less noticeable, they are light brown and have small brown spots on the sides of the body and on the basal part of the fins. Along a central longitudinal row, the steel-blue splendid Karpfling has 29 to 34 scales .

Fin formula : dorsal 12–16, anal 14–18

behavior

The steel blue calf is relatively aggressive internally, especially the males have violent arguments with each other. The females are strongly driven by their male counterparts. The spawn is attached to delicate plants. Without a dry phase, the larvae hatch within two to three weeks.

breed

A wool mob is best used for breeding. The fish lay their eggs on the wool mob, from where they can be collected. After about 3 weeks, the fry hatch, which can be raised very well with Artemia.

Systematics

The species forms a number of subspecies and local forms, four subspecies are currently recognized.

  • Fundulopanchax gardneri gardneri
  • Fundulopanchax gardneri nigerianum
  • Fundulopanchax gardneri mamfensis
  • Fundulopanchax gardneri lacustris

particularities

The steel-blue calf is considered to be particularly resistant to a lack of oxygen in water .
