Garies is a small agricultural center in the municipality of Kamiesberg , Namakwa District , Northern Cape Province in South Africa , around 110 kilometers south of Springbok , the district capital, and 146 kilometers northwest of Vanrhynsdorp . Garies is the seat of the municipal administration of Kamiesberg.
The place was founded in 1845. The name is derived from a Khoisan term for "creeping grass" that can be found in the area. In 2011 Garies had 2,105 inhabitants.
