Garry Lake ( Inuktitut : Hanningajuq ) is a large lake in the subarctic Kivalliq region of Nunavut in Canada .

Together with the adjacent Upper Garry Lake to the west and the Lower Garry Lake to the east, it forms the Garry Lakes system of lakes . The Back River flows through these lakes from west to east. Further upstream is Pelly Lake , further downstream is Buliard Lake . All lakes are separated from each other by rapids. The water levels of Upper Garry Lake, Garry Lake and Lower Garry Lake are 154 m, 152 m and 149 m, respectively. The total water surface of the lake system of the Garry Lakes covers 916 km². The Garry Lakes are located in an uninhabited area away from permanent settlements.

The Garry Lakes lake system is located in the geological province of the Churchill Kraton - Rae Kraton . It is a landscape with small differences in altitude. Sourgrass plants grow on the lakeshore .

fauna

Since Canada geese fly to the lake during their moult in late summer, the Canadian Wildlife Service declared the area a bird sanctuary ("Key Migratory Bird Terrestrial Habitat Site").

Natural resources

In 1981, Kidd Creek Minerals discovered rocks containing uranium on the north shore of Garry Lake . In 2007, Uravan Minerals Inc. explored the area with the aim of exploratory drilling and subsequent exploitation.
