Gary Robert Locke (born July 12, 1954 in Kingsbury ) is a former English football player .

Career

Locke developed in the youth team of Chelsea FC under coach Ken Shellito and made his debut in the professional team under Dave Sexton in September 1972 after the sale of the previous regular player on the right-back position, Paddy Mulligan . The English youth international immediately established himself in the top division team at the age of 18 and was voted Player of the Year by the club's supporters two years later. After relegation from the First Division in 1975, he managed to get promoted again with the team in 1977 and, despite being only 22 years old, was already one of the team's veterans. Permanent injury problems (right shoulder, right ankle, back) disrupted the further development of the defensive player, who was equipped with good positional play and tactical understanding, in the following seasons, when he was relegated again in 1979 he was only able to play eight games.

With the engagement of Joey Jones by coach John Neal in October 1982 Locke's time at Chelsea ended after 317 competitive appearances (4 goals). After a short loan period, he was permanently given in January 1983 to the second division competitor Crystal Palace , for which he was active until the beginning of 1986. As a result, he left England and spent the 1986 season at the Swedish first division club Halmstads BK before emigrating to New Zealand. There he played for a few more years and in 1989 won the national championship with the Napier City Rovers .
