Gary Magness

Gary Magness (born February 26, 1954 in Memphis , Texas ) is an American entrepreneur and film producer .

Life

Magness was born as the son of a farming family that was particularly successful in raising cattle and growing cotton . In 1956, however, they sold their farm and moved to Montana, where they got into cable television .

In 1968 his parents' company became Tele-Communications Inc. , the 10th largest cable television company in the United States, and his parents became multimillionaires. Today he still holds a substantial stake in AT&T shares, with which Tele-Communications Inc. merged in the 1990s. It was in this environment that Gary Magness grew up. He made his first professional experience with cable television.

After graduating from high school, however, he initially took a different path. He studied agriculture at the College of California and the Western State College of Colorado . There he was very successful in raising cattle. His ranch developed from a small one-man business to a high-tech operation that was run according to the latest scientific standards. In the early 1980s he specialized in Limousin cattle . He made his first million with his company Magness Land & Cattle. He also ran a branch of Mango Motors, a car dealership that specializes in classic cars . Then there was the Fortrust data center in Denver, Colorado, which was sold to Iron Mountain on July 28, 2017 for 128 million .

According to Forbes' list The World's Billionaires 2018, where he ranks 1650, his net worth is around 1.4 billion US dollars.

Together with his wife Sarah Siegel-Magness , he founded the film production company Smokewood Entertainment . Magness has so far produced the films Tennessee (2008), Precious - Life is Precious (2009), Judy Moody and the Cool Summer (2011) and Crazy Kind of Love (2013).

Together with his wife and Lee Daniels, he was nominated for an Oscar in the category of best film for Precious - Life is Precious . The three won the Black Reel Award and the Independent Spirit Award in the same year .
