from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gary Primich (born April 20, 1958 in Chicago , Illinois , † September 23, 2007 in Austin , Texas ) was an American blues harmonica and guitar player.

Life

He was born in Chicago and raised in Gary , Indiana . He learned the harmonica as a teenager at Maxwell Street Market. There he received a first-class blues education that could never be taught in a classroom. In 1984, after graduating from Indiana University, he moved to Austin, Texas. In 1987 he formed a band called The Mannish Boys with Jimmy Carl, the former drummer of the Mothers of Invention , who also recorded an album. After Carl left the band, Primich kept them together and recorded a second album. Both albums attracted so much attention that he was able to record an album under his own name, which was followed by several others.

Primich was able to steadily expand its fan base through tours. His qualities also made him sought after as a session musician. He has recorded with Omar & The Howlers , Tish Hinojosa, Steve James, Libbi Bosworth, Marcia Ball , Ruthie Foster , Mike Morgan and the Crawl, Nick Curran, Doyle Bramhall and Jimmie Vaughan .

In 1985 he released a double CD "Blues Harmonica: The Blues and Beyond", where he taught the basics of playing the blues harmonica.

Gary Primich died at the age of 49 of heroin poisoning in his Austin home.
