Gary Winnick

Gary Winnick (* 1961 ) is an American game developer , author and cartoonist . Together with Ron Gilbert he developed the computer game Maniac Mansion .

life and career

Originally from California, Winnick moved to New York for six months in 1976 to work in the studio of comic artist Neal Adams for six months . Back in California, he founded the Horizon Zero Graphiques studio and worked as a freelance draftsman. He later worked as a draftsman for Atari and switched to LucasArts in 1984 .

After several years of working as a developer, he was appointed co-designer for the point-and-click adventure Maniac Mansion in 1987 , which is also the most successful work of his career. In 1989 he was appointed head of the graphics department at LucasArts. During this time the game Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was created . In 1992 he developed Defenders of Dynatron City , his first solo project as a game developer. He then contributed some dialogues to the Maniac Mansion successor Day of the Tentacle before he left LucasArts in 1993 to start working for the US game developer Spectrum HoloByte . There he became a chief graphic artist and was involved in the development of the game Star Trek: The Next Generation - A Final Unity . In 1995 he co-founded the video game company Orbital Studios and in 1996 he returned to Lightsource Studios - formerly Horizon Zero Graphiques.

In 2013, Winnick started a crowdfunding campaign to fund his Bad Dreams comic series . Despite initial problems - crowdfunding failed - Bad Dreams was published in 2014 and sold well in the United States.

Together with Ron Gilbert, Winnick developed the game Thimbleweed Park in 2017 . The financing also comes from a crowdfunding campaign on the Kickstarter platform .
