Demonstrations in Koethen 2018

In September 2018 came in Köthen in Saxony-Anhalt to demonstrations of right and extreme right . The occasion was the death of Markus B., who died on the night of 9 September 2018 after a physical confrontation with two Afghan asylum seekers .

Death of Markus B.

The 22-year-old Markus B. and his 27-year-old brother, who according to the police had "been noticed as a right-wing extremist", quarreled with two Afghans, which resulted in a fight. According to witnesses, B. was said to have been kicked in the head by one or more Afghans. According to the autopsy result, he died of heart failure . According to media reports, he had a pre-existing cardiac disease. A stent had been inserted into him. Two Afghans , aged 18 and 20, were arrested. One of the two suspects should be deported beforehand. The Koethen district court thereupon issued arrest warrants against the suspects on suspicion of bodily harm resulting in death .

Demonstrations

On the evening of September 9th, according to a report by the Free Press, there was a “right-wing rally” in Koethen , in which around 2500 people took part. According to media reports, the rally was at times aggressive, shouts like “An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth”, “ We are the people ”, “The lying press ” or “ National socialism ! Now! Now! Now!". Many activists from the NPD and the “ Free Comradeships ” are said to have participated, including members of the neo-Nazi party The Right had called for the rally. The speakers spoke among others on account of incitement of extremist convicted founder Thügida movement in Thuringia, former NPD cadres and City Council in Greiz David Köckert of a " race war " the classic language of a Volksverhetzers "loud taz - against the German people." 220 people took part in the counter-protests. In addition, a high three-digit number of police officers was on duty. After the so-called funeral march in Köthen, the police initiated twelve criminal proceedings. A candle with the words Friede seit mit Dir was painted in front of the Jakobskirche . Other motifs were the peace sign , peace doves and the like. With a large contingent, the police secured renewed demonstrations on September 16, 2018. More than a thousand forces were deployed at different points in time, the police said before the demonstrations in the afternoon.

Republican demonstration

Further demonstrations took place on September 29, 2018. The Republicans' demonstration took place on the market square with 350, mostly non-residents. At the same time, an event of the initiative We want the same - a peaceful Köthen took place in front of the zoo with a total of 800 visitors. In addition to the mayor Bernd Hauschild, the university president Jörg Bagdahn , prime minister Reiner Haseloff , science minister Armin Willingmann and the songwriter Sarah Lesch also took part.

Reaction and reception

As a reaction to the demonstrations, the “Peaceful Köthen” campaign was established. The case and the demonstrations received international attention.
