Gascon (grape variety)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gascon is a red wine variety . It comes from the Yonne department in France, in France it is cultivated in small stocks on the Loire . In Australia, the grape variety was mistakenly called Gros Cabernet.

Before the phylloxera disaster , the variety was popular in the Yonne and Aube departments . In the northern growing areas, the variety rarely reached full maturity and yielded low-alcohol wines that were used by wine merchants in Paris to stretch southern red wines .

Gascon is also a synonym for the Mondeuse grape variety , but is not related to it.

Synonyms

The Gascon grape variety is also known under the names Arribet (especially on the Gascogne), Arrivet, Beaugency, Brumeau, Cayla, Caylar, Doyen Noir, Franc Noir de l'Yonne, Franc Noir du Gâtinais, Gros Cabernet (erroneously in Australia, not to confused with the grape variety Gros Cabernet ), Haute-Plaine, Larriver, Larrivet, Morineau, Plant de Moret and Rochelle Noir.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is hairy with white wool and is light green to carmine-red in color. The green young leaves are lightly hairy woolly.
  • The medium-sized leaves are whole or three-lobed and slightly curved (see also the article leaf shape ). The stalk bay is closed lyren-shaped. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are closely set compared to other grape varieties. The leaves turn reddish in autumn.
  • The cylindrical grape is small to medium-sized and has dense berries. The round berries are medium-sized (1.9 grams on average) and black and blue in color.

The variety ripens around 20 days after the Gutedel and is therefore already considered to ripen late. Gascon is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
