The Gash Cove (from colloquial English gash , garbage, trash, rubbish ' ) is a small bay on the east coast of Signy Island in the archipelago of the South Orkney Islands . It is located south of Berntsen Point .
Scientists from the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) surveyed the bay between 1947 and 1950. Aerial photographs were taken in 1968 by the Royal Navy . The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it that way in 2004 because the FIDS and the British Antarctic Survey had disposed of its rubbish here until 1991 when stricter environmental regulations prevented it.
