Gas engine No. 11 Differdange

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The gas engine No. 11 Differdingen ( lux . : Gas engine No. 11 Déifferdenger , lux .: Groussgasmaschinn for short ) is a motor generator from the Ehrhardt & Sehmer machine factory in Saarbrücken , which uses furnace gas ( lux . : Héichuewegas ) to generate electrical energy and at the same time using compressors Air (so-called wind) delivered to the gout . It is said to be the largest 4-cylinder gas engine that has ever been built. At the time of construction, this was the first large machine of its kind. In Differdange , the use of furnace gas combustion engines in the steel industry was practically used on a large scale for the first time.

Technical specifications

The system was installed in 1938 and cost the HADIR company around 20 million francs , the motor generator itself 9 million.

The machine has 4 cylinders with a capacity of 3000 liters each and, when the furnace gas is burned, an output of around 7 to 8 megawatts (around 9,000 to 11,000 hp). The alternator's flywheel is 11 meters in diameter and weighs 350 tons. During operation, the connected flywheel is rotated 94 times per minute. The system was not commissioned until 1942, as the machine was assembled on site from prefabricated individual parts. The plant will weigh 1,100 tons. The gas center in Differdange comprised a total of 14 gas machines.

The gas engine number 11 Déifferdeng supplied around six million watts of electrical energy from 1942 to 1979. In 1979 the blast furnaces were shut down, and since then there has been no blast furnace gas for operating the motor generator.

The machine is located in the gas engine hall II, built in 1906, in which the energy for the Differdingen steelworks ( lux . : Déifferdenger Schmelz ) was produced until 1979 .

conservation

The machine was added to the list of national monuments in Luxembourg on July 25, 2008.

An Association sans but lucratif (Asbl) is committed to ensuring that this gas machine system is preserved. It is to be integrated into a museum of industrial history, which is to be built, if possible, within the framework of the former Differdingen steelworks.
