Gaspard Laurent Bayle (born August 18, 1774 in Vernet , † May 11, 1816 in Paris ) was a French doctor. Antoine Laurent Jessé Bayle was his nephew.

Live and act

Born to wealthy landowners in the remote village of Vernet in the Provence mountains , Gaspard Laurent Bayle was sent to the Collège d ' Embrun at the age of twelve . There he received mathematics lessons from the Jesuit Father Rossignol, author of a paper in which he contradicted Buffon's theory of the origin of the earth . In 1790 Bayle entered a seminary, where he completed the philosophy course and a year of theology studies. The moment he was about to be ordained a priest , he decided to become a lawyer . At the age of 19 he was elected a member of the Department Council. When Barras and Fréron were sent south by the National Convention in March 1793 , Bayle and his friend M. Thomas were chosen to greet them on behalf of the city of Digne . The next day, his troubled parents arranged for him to travel to Montpellier , and so it happened that he began to study medicine. After studying medicine in Montpellier , he entered the medical service of the Armée du Midi in 1796 .

In 1798 Bayle continued his medical studies in Paris , where he received his doctorate in 1801. He successfully applied for the position of an intern ("élève internal") at the Hôpital de la Charité under Corvisart . At the intercession of Corvisart, he became provisional assistant in 1805, permanent assistant in 1807 at the Hôpital de la Charité and finally in 1808 Napoleon's personal physician (“médecin par quartier”) .

Bayle was an excellent practitioner and at the same time the leading theoretician of the pathological-anatomical Paris school. As with Philippe Pinel, his nosography was not based on symptoms but on lesions.

Bayle's main work is a treatise on tuberculosis based on various clinical and pathological-anatomical observations in the Corvisart School . Bayle distinguished between forty sub-groups and six main groups in this nosological complex. He differentiated between tubercular, granulating, melanotic-anthracotic, ulcerative, calcifying and cancerous forms.

Gaspard Laurent Bayle was a teacher and friend of René Laënnec (1781-1826). Bayle died of consumption at the age of only 41.
