Market area managers are joint ventures of several independent transmission system operators . The gas network operators Gascade (formerly Wingas Transport), Gasunie Deutschland , Ontras (formerly VNG Gastransport) and Dong Energy Pipelines merged their respective market areas in March 2009 and thus implemented a supra-regional market area cooperation; for this purpose the company Gaspool Balancing Services was founded. The company's tasks are balancing group management , the provision and operation of a virtual trading point and the introduction of a web-based market area information platform for the provision of u. a. Billing and control energy data .

Originally, the four founding shareholders each held 25% of the company shares. On October 1, 2011, Gaspool and the Aequamus market area merged their market areas; this creates a new cross-quality market area under the name GASPOOL. For this purpose, the two companies Aequamus GmbH and Gaspool Balancing Services GmbH were also merged ; the network operator GTG Nord (subsidiary of EWE ), Nowega (formerly Erdgas Münster Transport) became new shareholders of Gaspool. Gaspool's expanded market area thus connects around 400 downstream distribution networks and, according to the company's own information, covers around half of the German gas market (mainly in northern and eastern Germany).

In 2018 Gaspool and Netconnect announced that they would merge their market areas on October 1, 2021. Both companies are obliged to do this under the new gas network access ordinance.
