The Ontras Gas Transport GmbH is a transmission system operator for natural gas based in Leipzig . Ontras is a subsidiary of VNG - Verbundnetz Gas and operates Germany's second largest pipeline network with around 7,000 kilometers of pipeline length and around 450 network interconnection points.

VNG founded Ontras on January 1st, 2006. This had become necessary due to the demands of the Energy Industry Act for a complete separation of gas trading and transport under company law. As part of the 3rd EU internal energy market package , Ontras has meanwhile been completely unbundled and since then has also been responsible for the operation and maintenance of the networks and systems.

network

The company's network concentrates on Brandenburg , Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , Saxony , Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia . There are numerous network interconnection points with other transmission system operators .

Network structure data

The network operated has a total length of 6,935 km and is exclusively a high-pressure network (as of 2018). Almost three quarters of the network have nominal widths of 500 millimeters or larger.

The table shows the proportions of the pipe diameter classes in the overall network:

Cable diameter class length proportion of
A (nominal diameter DN: x ≥ 1000 mm) 233 km 3.4%
B (nominal diameter DN: 700 mm ≤ x <1000 mm) 1714 km 24.7%
C (nominal diameter DN: 500 mm ≤ x <700 mm) 3147 km 45.4%
D (nominal diameter DN: 350 mm ≤ x <500 mm) 832 km 12.0%
E (nominal diameter DN: 200 mm ≤ x <350 mm) 677 km 9.8%
F (nominal diameter DN: 100 mm ≤ x <200 mm) 219 km 3.2%
G (nominal diameter DN: x <100 mm) 113 km 1.6%
total 6935 km 100%

Regenerative gases

At Ontras, 26 biogas plants feed the gas into the network. In total, up to 180 million cubic meters of biogas flow into the Ontras network at full capacity . The costs of connecting a biogas plant to the gas network and feeding in the biogas are allocated to all network points in the Gaspool market area via the biogas levy. Ontras calculates this amount annually from the submitted costs for all transmission system operators in the Gaspool market area as a service.

Ontras participates in power-to-gas projects. In August 2013, the first plant for feeding hydrogen generated from wind power into the Ontras network went into operation in Falkenhagen . A second plant has been feeding in hydrogen since December 2014; a third system is being planned.

Participations and cooperations

Ontras is co-founder and shareholder (20%) of Gaspool , one of the two German market areas for natural gas. Ontras was also co-initiator of Gatrac, Germany's first cross-border cooperation platform for gas transports between Germany and the Czech Republic, which was discontinued in October 2013. Ontras is working together with European transmission system operators in the development of the European platform Prisma for marketing capacities, which was founded in early 2013 as the successor to the German capacity platform trac-x. Ontras is also a shareholder in other companies, including the Prisma European Capacity Platform (1.33%).

Memberships

Ontras is a member of the Association of European Gas Transmission System Operators (ENTSOG). and in the Federal Association of Energy and Water Management (BDEW). Ontras is also a founding member of the Association of Gas Transmission System Operators (FNB Gas).
