description
Vegetative characteristics
Gasteria baylissiana grows without a trunk, is prostrate to upright and 0.5 to 4 centimeters high. It is rarely solitary, usually sprouts from the base and forms small, dense groups with a diameter of up to 8 centimeters. The upright spreading, often later spreading or bent back, band-shaped leaves are arranged in two rows on the shoot. The leaf blade is 2.5 to 5.5 inches long and 2 to 2.3 inches wide. The epidermis is densely covered with white cartilaginous, dome-shaped to spherical warts that flow together and form a dense network. The leaf margin is tiny notched. The tip of the leaf is bluntly rounded, trimmed or rounded and has an attached tip. Young leaves are ribbon-shaped, warty and slightly rough.
Inflorescences and flowers
The upright inflorescence is a panicle and reaches a length of 8 to 35 centimeters. Occasionally it has a pair of side branches. The pink-red flower envelope is 14 to 16 millimeters long. Your bulbous part extends over two thirds of the length of the flower envelope and has a diameter of 6 to 7.5 millimeters. Above it, it is suddenly constricted into a white, green-striped tube with a diameter of 3 to 4 millimeters. The stylus does not protrude from the flower envelope.
The flowering time is spring.
Fruits and seeds
The fruits are 14 to 20 millimeters long. They contain seeds 4 millimeters long and 3 millimeters wide .
Systematics and distribution
Gasteria baylissiana is widespread in the South African province of Eastern Cape in thickets on quartzitic sandstone.
The first description by Werner Rauh was published in 1977.
