The Gasteria , Germanized they are also called Gasteria , are a genus of plants from the subfamily of the Affodill family (Asphodeloideae). About 22 species belong to the genus . Their natural distribution is limited to the southern and western part of the Republic of South Africa with a species that extends into the border regions to Namibia ( Gasteria pillansii ).

description

Gasteria are evergreen succulent plants. All species grow in two rows when young, about half of the species change to rosette-shaped growth in old age. Most species form many offshoots (Kindel) near the mother plant. Solitary gastritis are rare, as a rule they form dense cushions. The simple, succulent leaves usually have a horny edge, but are never reinforced. The leaf surface is dark green with bands of white dots.

Gasteria form lateral or terminal, sometimes branched, loose inflorescences , mostly they are racemose . The hermaphrodite, zygomorphic flowers are threefold. The bracts are yellowish to red or yellow and often have green tips. The bracts are fused with tubes, but they are not double-lipped, which is a main distinguishing feature from Haworthia species. The flower tube is curved and bulbous, this is the main distinguishing feature to Aloë species (hence the botanical name: from Greek gáster for belly). There are fruit capsules formed.

Systematics

The genus Gasteria was founded in 1809 by Henri Auguste Duval in Pl. Succ. Horto Alencon. , 6 first described. A heterotypical synonym is Ptyas Salisb.

species

The South African Gasteria specialist Ernst van Jaarsveld from the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden and author of the Gasteria standard work Gasterias of South Africa, A new revision of a major succulent group (Fernwood Press, Vlaeberg 1994) drastically reduced the more than 100 Gasteria names and demonstrated that that many common names such as Gasteria caespitosa , Gasteria maculata , Gasteria marmorata , Gasteria minima or Gasteria prolifera are only location varieties, misdescriptions or culture hybrids .

The genus Gasteria is divided into two sections, each with two series, and includes the following species:
